ANCIENT LANDSCAPES AND CULTIVATION IDENTIFICATION

ANCIENT LANDSCAPES AND CULTIVATION IDENTIFICATION

Archeofoss 2020 hosted Augusto Palombini’s works on the reconstruction of ancient landscape, comprising the whole vegetation cover and the geomorphology, both natural and anthropic (abstract in https://zenodo.org/record/4002961#.YHgzlOgzaUk).

The author presented new methods for checking and reconstructing relevance and distribution of ecosystems, dealing with cultivated areas in relation to demographic data.

The aim is to propose a complete pipeline to create 3D landscape representations. It starts collecting digital cartography and anthropic indexes related to social complexity, ecosystems and cultivated areas. Then, the resulting joined map is used by modeling software to create a 3D representation of the landscape.

Therefore, this study offers a complete open-source working chain script, connecting GRASS GIS, Blender 3D, Unreal Engine and the web viewer ATON, to create a landscape generator covering the whole path from ecosystem theory up to immersive visualization.
