La tecnologia RTI (Reflectance Transformation Imaging) è una tecnica di indagine di imaging utilizzata per catturare in dettaglio la superficie caratteristica degli oggetti attraverso l'acquisizione e l'accurata rappresentazione delle proprietà riflettenti di oggetti tridimensionali.
Questo processo permette di vedere l'oggetto illuminato da differenti angoli di illuminazione, si tratta quindi di un particulare strumento utile per la conservazione, la storia dell'arte, l'archeologia e gli ambiti annessi. La tecnologia RTI è ormai affermata perché riesce a mostrare le differenti qualità superficiali di un'ampia varietà di materiali, come incisioni su pietra, dipinti, monete e tessili.
L'app è stata realizzata dalla società Artis CT, una piccola start-up con sede a Toronto, in Canada, costituita da Tessa Thomas, conservatrice di materiale cartaceo, and Cornell Skyers, programmatore independente. Attualmente diverse istituzioni museali in Canada, USA ed Regno Unito sono interessati all'applicazione.
RTI Mobile app, disponibile al momento solo per dispositivi iOs, può essere utilizzata per mostre temporanne e percorsi museali, come strumento interattivo per coinvolgere i visitatori con gli oggetti esposti così come strumento di auto per ricercatori e conservatori. L'app fornisce strumenti di gestione intuitivi ed un menu facilmente personalizzabile. I manufatti possono essere visualizzati mediante luce direzionale o con un filtro speculare per rivelare dettagli sottili, difficilmente visibili in altro modo.

Reflectance transformation imaging (RTI) is a powerful imaging technique used to capture, in detail, the surface characteristics of objects; this is achieved through the acquisition and accurate representation of the object’s three-dimensional reflectance properties. This process enables the viewer to see the object as though it were being illuminated by a raking light from every angle; thus it is an incredible research tool in conservation, art history, archaeology and related fields. RTI has been proven to be successful in capturing the unique surface qualities of a variety of materials, including inscriptions on stone, paintings, coins and textiles.
The RTI Mobile app has the ability to bring this technology into exhibition spaces as an interactive platform for visitors to engage with artifacts in a new way, as well as assist researchers and conservators. The RTI Mobile app features intuitive gesture controls and an easily customizable menu. Artifacts can be viewed using directional light or a specular filter to reveal subtle details, which would otherwise be very difficult to see.
The app was developed by Artis CT, a small start-up based in Toronto, Canada, it was co-founded by Tessa Thomas and Cornell Skyers. Tessa is a paper conservator and Cornell is an independent programmer. They currently have interest in the app from institutions in Canada, the USA and the UK.
