Abstract
Mn-rich bodies can be found in the alteration layer of ancient glass objects and cause the surface to turn dark brown to black. Historical glass contains manganese in the Mn(II) or Mn(III) oxidation states. In the Mn-containing bodies, instead, manganese is reported to be in the Mn(IV) state. Both internal and external sources of Mn have been hypothesised to explain this phenomenon. In restoration practice, dark surface layers are converted into colourless ones with the local application of reducing solutions. In this paper the composition of fragments of stained-glass window dated to the 14th century, originating from excavations in Sussex College, Cambridge (UK) was analyzed with SEM-EDX. The shape and distribution of the Mn-bodies were imaged with SEM-EDX and high resolution CT. The samples were treated with different solutions used in glass restoration and after the treatment, the concentration of Mn in the solutions has been measured via FAAS. These concentrations have been compared with the calculated content of Mn effectively available for extraction in the alteration layer of the samples. The results here presented are useful for glass restorers/conservators, in view of an optimal conservation practice.
