2+3D Photography – Practice and Prophecies

Rijksmuseum, 15–16 April 2015

Professional photographers have successfully adapted to the challenges presented by image digitization, even to the extent that a streamlined, standardized data workflow has been developed and integrated into practice. Digital photography has emerged as a powerful process. New applications for science, research, and object conservation appear regularly. Advancements are moving very fast, such that, just as everything seems to be properly integrated into our workflow, new technical advancements regarding developments in areas such as restoration, radiography, or 3D printing seem to appear out of nowhere. The lessons the heritage and fine art community has learned in recent years with a shared understanding of what would be best practice must be applied to the challenges presented by any new digital techniques that arise.

This conference will inspire us to adopt existing standardized workflows, and challenge us to adapt to new digital possibilities. It will also give us the opportunity to discuss how we can incorporate new techniques into international standards of practice.

The morning program will contain presentations on fine art and heritage photography, best practices and new technologies. The afternoon program is comprised of workshops conducted by photographers from the Rijksmuseum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Experts will address new techniques such as 3D scanning of objects and paintings, and multispectral and hyperspectral imaging. In addition to this, specialists in the area of digitization and organization will be speaking on their specialism.

The conference is organized by the Rijksmuseum, in cooperation with the Association for Historical and Fine Art Photography (AHFAP), The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The J. Paul Getty Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, Allard Pierson Museum, and The DEN Foundation.
The official language will be English.

Scope
The conference offers an outstanding and unique opportunity for exchanging knowledge on existing practices and future developments.

We will round off the conference with a discussion on a set of Rijksmuseum Principles. We, as hands-on users of digitization technology, can use these principles to take the initiative to convey our desires and expectations regarding the new technologies that developers will be presenting in the coming years.

The aim of this conference is to provide us with a framework for international compatibility on the best practice methods for digitizing our heritage, and to provide an exchange of ideas on how we should meet the challenges that lie ahead.

Conference Topics
How our photography is used
Daily practice and large digitization projects
3D scanning of objects and paintings
Multispectral and hyperspectral imaging
Cultural Heritage/Architecture photography and reconstruction
Planning, organization and preservation (studio, archive, DAM)
Workshops Hands On!
