s many of you know the Gordon Research Conferences provide an international forum for the presentation and discussion of frontier research in the biological, chemical, and physical sciences, and their related technologies and are organized around a format that encourages discussion, creativity and networking.

This first GRC conference in cultural heritage science will bring together as discussion leaders and speakers thirty-eight leading researchers from museums, art conservation research centers, universities, and national laboratories coming from the United States, Europe, Canada, Mexico, Israel, China and Japan.  A large poster session is scheduled and the participation to the conference of students, young researchers and junior faculty as well as scientists and conservators is encouraged.

The gathering will provide a unique opportunity for scientists from academia and cultural institutions to discuss collaborative research

opportunities: this would be impossible at any of the existing conferences, which are generally more narrowly focused and highly specialized.

In short, the conference will foster the dialogue between those pushing the boundaries on methods and instrumentation and researchers in cultural heritage.

Opening a forum for a productive confrontation to match the needs with achievable goals is perhaps the greatest necessity today in cultural heritage research, and we hope that, with your participation, we can make this event a great success, reinforcing the strength and vitality of our discipline.
