| he 13th Annual Cambridge Heritage Seminar welcomes back distinguished Cambridge Alumni who will reflect on the emergence and trajectory of Heritage as a discipline, and envision routes for its future development. For more information on CHS13, please visit the information page. Background: Over twenty years ago heritage studies first made their appearance in university courses. Then, heritage was, often disparagingly, represented as a form of management: counting audience numbers, setting up gift shops and cafés, attracting tourists, and generally making the material remains of the past pay for their own up-keep. This understanding of heritage has changed dramatically. Heritage studies now delve into the terrains of war and politics, of memory and identity, of meaning and value. Researchers in heritage today question power structures and critically tackle out-dated frameworks, reflecting on the possible repercussions of decisions taken today. For the 13th edition of the Cambridge Heritage Seminar distinguished Cambridge alumni are invited back to share their professional experiences since completing their studies and to take part in a day of reflection and conversation on the trajectory of heritage from its origins, to its present state and project forward into the ways ahead. |
